KNBC: “Telecopter” Reporter
Died: 1977
Powers is the same pilot who became famous after his U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960. His later death in a helicopter crash is a fascinating and somewhat tragic second chapter of his life.
In the 1970s, Francis Gary Powers was killed in a helicopter crash in Encino while working as a “Telecopter” reporter for KNBC. Powers and cameraman George Spears died in the crash. They had been covering brush fires northwest of Los Angeles when their helicopter went down in a field near the Sepulveda Dam.
