“Chester (Chet) Mitchell, a World War II veteran and retired engineer for WXYZ-TV (Channel 7), died Sunday at his home in White Lake Township after a battle with Parkinson’s disease. The former Southfield resident was 90.
Born in Detroit, he graduated from Northeastern High School in 1936 and attended Lawrence Institute of Technology for several years.
After marrying Lisa Felice in December 1942, Mr. Mitchell served in the Army Air Forces during World War II with a bomb squadron in the Pacific theater and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was discharged in 1945 and hired at WXYZ-TV a year later. For most of his career, he was a technical director on the evening newscasts; he retired in 1983.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, David; a daughter, Lisa Iacobelli, and four grandchildren.
A funeral mass is set for 11 a.m. today at St. Hugo of the Hills Church, 2215 Opdyke in Bloomfield Hills. Visitation will precede the mass at 10:30 a.m.
The body will be cremated.”
