The Detroit News, May 8, 1991, Tim Kiska:
Bonds signs lifetime deal – $1 million a year – Flamboyant anchor at Channel 7 becomes highest paid broadcaster in city.
TV news anchorman Bill Bonds has signed a lifetime contract with Channel 7 that will pay him more than $1 million a year, advertising and television sources aid.
The deal, which extends until the flamboyant anchorman reaches retirement age and beyond – at Bonds‘ option – is unique in Detroit broadcasting and perhaps in the nation.
In an interview Tuesday, the 59-year-old Bonds declined to discuss the dollar amount of that contract but described it as extending for his “lifetime – five or seven years, my option,” with the opportunity to stay on as a special consultant or a broadcaster emeritus, “like what David Brinkley does” for ABC News.
