After a 51-year career, I have decided to retire. It is with mixed emotions, but certainly is driven by positive anticipation of the next phase of my life.
My journey took flight in the summer of 1968. It was the summer before my high school 11th Grade, the summer the Detroit Tigers won the World Series, and the summer I got my first job at WKNR Radio, Keener 13… minimum wage, $1.60 an hour… answering the Request Lines every night from 6pm to Midnight.
A month after graduating high school, I was on the air at WWWW (W4) Radio, eventually as a “long-haired DJ”. One highlight… playing a recording on the very first day it came out… “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. In 1973, I was the Program Director at W4 with highlights that included hiring a guy out of Oakland University for his very first day on the radio… Ken Calvert. I stayed in “radio programming” through 1978, filling my last summer on-air with countless replays of “Dancing Queen” by Abba.
1975-1976 I worked at WXYZ-TV Channel 7 on both The Dennis Wholey Show and with Bob Lipson on Michigan Replay with Bo Schembechler.
In 1978, I began my time in radio sales at WWJ, eventually becoming a Sales Manager there. I would also sell for WOMC Radio, WDIV-TV Channel 4, and ultimately NewsTalk 760 WJR, where I have been for the last 11 years. There were a few minor detours over the 51-years… and one, not so minor… 17-years running my own Mobile DJ Service.
And now, after five decades, this flight has started its decent.
To aid in a smooth transition, I will still be at WJR for several weeks, but the “fasten seat belts light” is on, the “announcement to store carry-on luggage” has been made, and, sooner than later, the tires will hit the runway.
I did not do this alone. To everyone who was there with me on my journey, I am appreciative and honored.
