WXYZ: Reporter, Meteorologist

Brett Kast is a reporter at WXYZ-TV, the ABC affiliate in Detroit, Michigan. He has covered a variety of stories, including breaking news, community events, and investigative pieces. Before joining WXYZ, he worked at other news stations, gaining experience in broadcast journalism. Brett is known for his engaging reporting style and dedication to delivering accurate news to the Detroit community.

Brett Kast joined the Channel 7 Action News team as a general assignment reporter in September 2020. Born and raised in Troy, Michigan, he is a graduate of Troy Athens High School and Michigan State University. Before joining WXYZ, Brett worked as a reporter at the NBC affiliate in Traverse City and later at the FOX and CBS affiliates in Indianapolis. During his time in Indianapolis, he won an Emmy for his work covering the story of 18 veterans who were laid to rest by strangers after no family could be found. He also helped lead the station’s live coverage of protests after the death of George Floyd.

Brett is also the co-founder and board member of The Jenna Kast Believe in Miracles Foundation, a wish-granting organization based in metro Detroit. Named in honor of his younger sister Jenna, who passed away from brain cancer in 2010, the organization grants wishes to Michigan children battling life-threatening illnesses.

Outside of reporting, Brett is a proud Spartan sports fan and enjoys exploring Michigan’s natural beauty. He often spends his free time running nearby trails, visiting local breweries, and escaping up north to enjoy the lake in the summer and snowmobile trails in the winter.
