Johnny Ginger – Video from his personal archives.

Here’s a clip from the classic Curtain Time Theater hosted by Johnny Ginger. This is from Johnny’s personal archive. This show was aired on WXYZ CH 7 in Detroit in the late 50’s and early 60’s.

  1. This last clip of Johnny Ginger, as the studio stagehand talking to himself on TV, I believe, was recorded at the original WXYZ-TV studios at the Maccabees Building, on Woodward Ave. and Warren Ave, and directly south of the Detroit Public Library’s Main Branch in 1958 through early 1960. In 1960, the WXYZ stations (AM, FM and TV) consolidated their operations, and moved to a brand new facility on 20777 W. Ten Mile Rd., in Southfield, MI. (The TV station is still there, however the radio stations were sold off, and have moved out of the complex, back in the 1980s) After WXYZ moved to the new location, Johnny Ginger’s character changed from being the stagehand to a new look, that of being a hotel bellhop/bellboy, and he wore a multi-buttoned blazer/jacket, with matching trousers. As a kid at that time, I didn’t hear of a reason for the costume change, as, although I enjoyed Johnny’s antics, I was more interested in watching the Three Stooges and Edgar Kennedy short comedy films.

Thanks Robert! We love hearing from the viewers. Although well after the live “hay day” after Detroit television, I worked my entire career after 1970 at the station. It was an amazing time for me.
