Glover, Joseph Lawrence; “Joe”

WJBK: Anchor

Tracey Narayani Glover writes:

Dr. Joseph Lawrence Glover, 79, died at home in Mobile, AL, on the morning of October 5th from complications associated with metastatic lung cancer. Born December 11, 1938 in Delaware, he was the only child of Mary E. Boyd. He grew up in Chelmsford Massachusetts, attended Duke University for his first year of college, then went on to the University of Miami, where he worked his way through college as an overnight radio announcer and graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism. After college he was drafted into the army and served at home and abroad at the end of the Korean War. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a TV news reporter and anchor, bringing great dignity, professionalism, and humanity to his work. He was a black belt in karate, a skydiver, a scuba diver, tennis player, and runner. He traveled the world for work and for pleasure. He was an amateur pilot. He liked good wine, and contemplating the cosmos. He had a dry sense of humor, an existential curiosity, a great tenderness and gentleness towards all living creatures, a deep sensitivity to the world, and he was the best dad ever. For many years he hosted the Muscular Dystrophy telethon in Detroit, Michigan, where he loved and was loved by the whole MD family. After retiring from TV, he returned to school to pursue a PhD at the University of Florida and became a professor of broadcast journalism at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL, where he taught, and loved teaching, until his illness forced him to retire in the fall of 2017. A lifelong animal lover, and crazy cat man, he volunteered for many animal rescue and vegan outreach groups. He leaves behind a house full of rescued dogs and cats, an adoring and devoted daughter, Tracey Winter Glover, ex-wife and dear friend Sylvia Glover, and a legacy of kindness, humor, and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to local cat rescue organization Project Purr Animal Rescue Adoptable Cats and Kittens, or Compassion Over Killing, a DC based organization whose mission embodies his deep love of all animals, especially the most vulnerable.
