Florida Hurricans and Channel Seven – September 2017

WXYZ Studio Control
WXYZ Studio Control – (L-R) Matthew Bishop, Matthew J Bellehumeur and Bill Bullock

Today was one of the most challenging, yet fulfilling days in my career in broadcast television.

With Hurricane Irma bearing down on Florida, our sister station in Fort Myers had to evacuate. Rather than leave a simple radar loop going and calling it good, some anchors and meteorologists went to another sister station in Tampa. From there, they went through our second control room here in Detroit, to the master control hub in Indianapolis then back to Fort Myers, featuring a virtual set, more detailed weather information, live press conferences from Florida state officials, evacuation information and much more to help them get through the storm.

We called in colleagues from Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Buffalo to help man our control room, and even more stations from the family (including us!) have sent reporters, photographers and other staff down to the area in the path of the storm to help keep the people informed. It was one of those days where you felt the whole team come together to help make something go from “Hey… is this even possible?” to “Let’s do this!” – Nick Leix from Facebook, September 9, 2017
